The professionally applied fluoride treatment is a valuable weapon in the war against tooth decay. The dramatic reduction in cavities observed the past twenty five years is largely due to this. These treatments are so effective because we can apply a concentrated fluoride solution in a way that ensures it properly absorbed by the enamel. The teeth are first cleaned with a slightly abrasive paste.
The enamel is exposed in a way that makes it easier to take up the fluoride. The flavored fluoride gel is placed in soft foam trays that resemble mouthpieces athletes wear. The teeth are carefully dried with a stream of air and the trays are inserted. They remain on the teeth four minutes. A small suction tube is placed in the mouth to remove any excess fluoride.
When the trays are removed, the excess gel is spit out. The patient is then instructed to avoid eating or drinking anything for thirty minutes. We try to start fluoride treatments as soon as we feel a child can tolerate them and are usually given until nineteen years old. We also give these treatments to adults that are cavity-prone. The office fluoride treatment along with good oral hygiene and proper diet helps make teeth strong and resistant to decay. Ask your dentist or hygenist about this important service.
