A new device has recently become available for home oral hygiene. "Spin brushes" are inexpensive, battery operated toothbrushes. I checked at a local supermarket and the prices ranged from six to twelve dollars. Many of the spin brushes were designed for children and they seemed very appealing. One designed by Colgate was based on a Lego toy. I saw a Crest spin brush that looked like a cell phone. There were others based on popular cartoon characters. Most of the brushes are powered by AA batteries and had brush heads that could be replaced when they wear out.
The brush heads usually had an upper part that spins, and an adjacent part that was like a conventional toothbrush. The bristles are the recommended soft nylon with polished tips. The spin brush combines manual tooth brushing with an extra mechanical boost from the part that spins.
Many of my patients, both children and adults, have been using these brushes. In general, I've noticed improved oral hygiene among these patients. I'm not sure if this is because the brush is so much better or because people like to use them. I think the novelty of using a spin brush makes people brush longer and more frequently. I'm in favor of anything that reduces plaque and improves oral hygiene. If you think a spin brush might help with your home care, I think they are worthwhile. Just remember that flossing is still required to remove plaque from between the teeth.
