Irrigating devices such as the Water-Pik can be a valuable addition to your oral hygiene regimen. These devices use a pressurized stream of water to help massage the gum tissue and flush debris from the area between the tooth and the gum. Although they cannot take the place of dental flossing, irrigating devices do help remove some forms of plaque and other material that accumulate between the teeth.
The massaging action helps stimulate circulation in the gum tissue and this can make it more resistant to inflammation. Using an irrigating device once a day is usually sufficient. Use it after brushing and flossing at bedtime. Using one or two capfuls of mouthwash in the water reservoir is also a good idea. Start with a low pressure setting and gradually turn it up as the gum tissue becomes accustomed to the stimulation. Also, devices that use a pulsating stream of water are more effective than devices that use a continuous water spray.
